Ok, below is last years report. This year was much different. We went last week of May and it was the windiest and coldest week they’ve had in 16 years. Lucky us. There were constant whitecaps on the lake and the pleasurable sun and calm of last year was all gone. Plus the group was broke up this year with just four of us on this trip. But even with all this we were there to fish and that’s exactly what we did. No topwater this year, no mayflies, and you basically had to drift and reel but a large amount of smallies were still caught. Once again this year I relied on “puke” tubes and stick baits for the majority; while some were having luck with lipless rattle cranks.... [Read more of this post]

Ok, below is last years intro to grass lake; but this year was a bit different. First of all, we went earlier this time around the last week of May. Because of this there was a lot less “grass” in grass lake as well as only a scattering of lilly pads. The weather was also different as the whole week was cold and very windy. This being said there was still fish to be caught along the reeds. Check out this 19″ largemouth caught on a “puke” colored tube. Not bad considering we had to wear artic wear. lol There is a little lake in Michigan called Grass Lake and it is named correctly. Lily pads and tall grass cover the lake of about 900 acres. It’s a great little lake... [Read more of this post]

Crappie Fishing At Houston Woods (Acton Lake)

On a recent Sunday of fishing on Acton Lake (located in Houston Woods State Park) the crappie were definitely biting. Though the normal routine is to drop minnows on a Kentucky rig with a ½ or 1 ounce weight, today was different. The crappie only seemed to be hitting the drop shots when the wind was moving the boat around giving some movement to the presentation. Being this was the case we switched over to casting small 1/16 to 1/8 ounce roadrunners fitted with a small tube-like black and chartreuse skirt. Then we tipped them with live minnows. So how’d this work out? Over 130 crappies were caught between 7:00 am and 3:00 pm. Not a bad day. On top of the crappie numbers we pulled in 4... [Read more of this post]

Marine GPS Mapping Software – Buying Tips

Marine GPS Mapping Software is the heart and soul of your GPS or GPS/Fishfinder Combo. Many gps and combination units come preloaded with simple maps of major lakes and bodies of water. While preloaded maps are getting better all the time, many people opt to buy additional mapping software and “upload” it to their gps. Not only can you mark waypoints and track your course, some of these more expensive map versions offer detailed information on water depth, contour and even fishing hot spots. The first thing to be aware of is the design of your gps or fishfinder. While some come with preloaded maps as mentioned above, some of the cheaper models do not offer a way to add additional... [Read more of this post]

Fall Smallmouth Bass Trip

This year is the first time we took a fall Michigan trip for smallies and only 4 of use went. On our normal spring trip in early June, up to 13 may go. The third week of September we headed toward Michigan for 4 days of fishing. Because of the time of year and not knowing what kind of weather we could expect I took an assortment of clothing from t-shirts and shorts to heavy sweatshirts to insulated overhauls. In the spring it was easy to find smallies in shallow water around any kind of cover. If it was a bright shiny day you would always find smallmouth bass around the docks or any rock that gave any shade at all. The fishing tackle we used in the spring was tubes and top water which always... [Read more of this post]
