Deer Hunting 101 – What Do Deer Eat?

Deer, in their natural habitat, do not eat “deer feed” that can be purchased at the feed store. So, left to their own devices, what do deer eat? Deer are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants. While there are plenty of plants in the forest, not all plants provide adequate nutrition for deer. Much like humans, deer have preferences for certain foods and will eat them whenever and wherever they find them. When these foods are not available they will move on to acceptable foods (less nutrition and less tasty, but still acceptable.) AEP Ohio ReCreation Land

For the past few years four of us have trekked to the AEP Recreation lands near Zanesville, Ohio. The land formally (Ohio Powers) was used for drilling and mining and has now been “reclaimed” into a wonderful wildlife retreat. This area now offers all types of outdoor recreation including; fishing, camping, hunting, hiking, and horseback riding. Although there are plenty of campsites, we stay in a little bed and breakfast in McConnelsille. While there are numerous outdoor activities to be enjoyed, our trip is for one purpose; fishing. Fishing the over 300 AEP lakes and ponds is not for the faint hearted. This is fishing in its natural form. There are no boat ramps or docks. We fish... [Read more of this post]
